KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
We are pleased to introduce our distinguished keynote speakers of Borders and Crossings 2018, among them Tim Youngs, the co-founder of Borders and Crossings in 1998:
Tim founded in 1997 the journal Studies in Travel Writing (now published four times a year by Routledge), which he continues to edit; he created in 2002 NTU's Centre for Travel Writing Studies; he established with Peter Hulme the monograph series Routledge Research in Travel Writing.
It is our pleasure to announce as a keynote speaker Svein Mønnesland, professor emeritus at the University of Oslo, an expert in Slavic Philology, Balkan studies and Yugoslav cultural history, the author of the monograph Dalmatia through Foreign Eyes:
We are delighted that prof. Mønnesland will present his new book Istria and Kvarner through Foreign Eyes at the conference in Pula.
We also expect an inspiring keynote by Wendy Bracewell, Professor of South-East European History at University College London, and the director of the UCL Mellon postdoctoral programme:
As one of the most prolific scholars in the field of travel studies, with her research project ‘East Looks West’, prof. Bracewell offered new perspectives on various notions such as center and periphery, the role of travels in nation formation, and cultural difference. More recently, she is working on travel polemics – the answers by the locals (the ‘travelees’) to foreign travelogues.
We are also proud to announce that Professor Peter Borsay from the Aberystwyth University will join us as a keynote speaker at the Borders and Crossings Conference on the Brijuni Islands. The author of "A history of leisure: The British experience since 1500", editor of "Resorts and ports: European seaside towns since 1700" (2011, with J.K. Walton) and Leisure cultures in urban Europe c. 1700-1870: A transnational perspective (2015), prof. Borsay will present his research on the historical origins of travel and tourism and development of the spa and seaside resorts in Europe.
